history–mysteries:

Caligula, Roman emperor from 37 to 41, was born #onthisday in AD12. He was the son of the popular Roman general Germanicus and Augustus’s granddaughter, Agrippina the Elder.

Although named Gaius Julius Caesar, he acquired the nickname “Caligula” (meaning “little boot”) from the small soldier’s outfit he wore on his father’s campaigns.

During his reign he killed many relatives: cousins, his grandmother and father-in-law. His uncle Claudius was spared only because Caligula found him a laughing-stock.

Relations between Caligula and the Roman Senate were very poor.

According to Suetonius, Caligula planned to make his racehorse, Incitatus, a consul. This was to ridicule the senate that his horse was rich enough and capable enough to perform a senator’s duties.

The Praetorian Guard conspired to murder the emperor. Details vary several conspirators stabbed Caligula, The assassins then found and killed Caligula’s wife and young daughter.

Claudius was found hiding behind a palace curtain and soon became emperor after procuring the support of the Praetorian Guard.
